Día de los Niños and Día de los Libros is more than a one-day affair at the County Library. Events celebrating Children’s Day/Book Day will take place throughout the month of April.
Mexico and many Latin American countries celebrate Día de Los Niños on April 30 but libraries across the U.S. now tie Children’s Day to the importance of books and literacy for children.
The idea came from award-winning poet and author Pat Mora in 1996. She saw it as a way to pay tribute to children, childhood and the importance of early literacy. Día, as it’s known, focuses on different cultures and the value of multilingual literacy and diverse library collections.
County library branches will host a variety of cultural events, performances and special programs designed to instill a love of reading in children and teens of all backgrounds. All of the branches will offer special events and book giveaways for kids and teens.
Special events include:
Día Kickoff Event
- Friday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
- Lakeside Community Center
- 9841 Vine Street
- Bilingual storytime, face painting and Ballet Folklorico performance
