San Diego’s City Council Has a New Look – and a Veto-Proof Majority (Voice of San Diego)

A City Council incumbent has not lost in San Diego in 27 years. If current results hold, two fell Tuesday night. One of those historic wins shifts power at City Hall to the Democrats. They have a 6-3, veto-proof majority after first-time candidate Jen Campbell knocked off Republican Lorie Zapf in District 2, the coastal district including Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and Point Loma.

UC San Diego plans to dramatically slow enrollment growth for two to three years so that it can absorb a huge increase in students and give the campus time to build or start about $1 billion in housing, classrooms and laboratories.  The university’s enrollment has soared by an average of 1,059 students a year since 2008, making it one of the fastest growing schools in the country, and contributing to campus housing shortages…

‘Horrific scene’: 13 dead including gunman at California bar (AP)

A gunman opened fire on a crowd at a country dance bar holding a weekly "college night" [at Thousand Oaks] in Southern California, killing 12 people and sending hundreds fleeing in terror, authorities said. The gunman was later found dead at the scene.

Wildfire erupts in Southern California near Thousand Oaks (10 News)

A wind-driven brush fire has erupted in Southern California, burning near structures in the Newbury Park area of Ventura County. Cal Fire says the Hill Fire has quickly grown to 5,000 to 7,000 acres, shutting down both directions of Highway 101, as of 4 p.m. More than 160 firefighters have been dispatched, and eight air tankers have been ordered. At a Thursday night news conference, Ventura County fire officials said they expect the blaze to burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
