June 24, 2017 (San Diego) - One run was enough for the Padres last night; pitching and defense combined to secure the win against the Tigers, but the Friars would try again for more tonight. Anibal Sanchez started for Detroit against Dinelson Lamet.

It was Lamet who put the Padres on the board in the third with a sac bunt that scored Chase d’Arnaud to take a 1-0 lead.

But the Tigers tied it up with Andrew Romine’s double that scored Justin Upton.  Jose Iglesias grounded into a fielder's choice to score Romine and the Tigers took the lead, 2-1.

Wil Myers tied it up in the sixth with a sac fly.

This time, the Tigers got the upper hand.  Romine singled to center in the seventh to score Upton and the Tigers took the lead 3-2.

Who was going to come through for the Padres?  The answer?  Pinch hitter Hector Sanchez.  In the eighth, with one swing of the bat, he blasted a two-run bomb to left field and it was gone.  The Padres you never thought you’d see in your lifetime emerged again and they took the lead again.  But that wasn’t all; Cory Spangenberg singled and scored two. Austin Hedges laid down the safety squeeze bunt that Alex Wilson couldn’t pick up, scoring a run and giving the Padres the 7-3 win and the series win.

The series finale is tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.  Jordan Zimmermann starts for Detroit against Clayton Richard.

Transaction news:

  • Padres sign MacKenzie Gore, third overall pick in the 2017 draft
