August 23, 2017 (St. Louis) - The Padres absolutely beat down the Cardinals last night.  Yangervis Solarte went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a two-run blast that sealed the 12-4 win.  They looked to replicate that tonight with Jhoulys Chacin on the mound against Luke Weaver for the Redbirds.

No domination would be had tonight.  Tommy Pham doubled in the first to score Kolten Wong and Dexter Fowler hit a sac fly that scored Pham and the Redbirds leapt out to a 2-0 lead.

Thanks to the Padres’ usual Gold Glove-caliber fielding, Wong scored in the third on a single by Jedd Gyorko that Yangervis Solarte bobbled and the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead.

The Padres’ usual playoff-caliber pickoff skills made an appearance in the fourth when Chacin tried to pick off Pham at second.  The throw got past Wil Myers and allowed Gregg Garcia, who was on third, to score and Pham to move to third.  The Cardinals took a 4-0 lead.

Fowler scored on another error in the fifth, a wild pitch that made the score 5-0.

The Padres started a semi-rally in the eighth with Manuel Margot’s triple that scored Matt Szczur and the Padres were finally on the board, trailing 5-1.

Kirby Yates almost got the Padres out of another bases loaded jam, but Gyorko doubled up the middle to score one run (would have been two, but the second run was overturned) and the Cardinals led 6-1.

Cory Spangenberg tried to keep the Padres in it with a solo homer in the ninth, rebounded to take game two 6-2.

The rubber game of the series is an hour earlier tomorrow at 4:15 p.m.  Luis Perdomo starts against Carlos Martinez for St. Louis.
