June 11, 2017 (San Diego) - One bad inning can be shaken off.  The Padres tried to do that with the eighth inning last night today in the series finale against the Royals.  Jake Junis started for Kansas City against Dinelson Lamet.

The Royals were the ones who struck first today.  After some wild pitches, Eric Hosmer singled in the first to score Lorenzo Cain.  Mike Moustakas jacked a three-run bomb shortly after and the Royals jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Alex Gordon added one more in the fourth with a solo line drive homer to right for his second home run of the year to make it 5-0.

It was also the second homer of the year for Cory Spangenberg, as he hit a solo to center in the bottom of the fourth to get the Padres on the board, but they still trailed 5-1.

Hosmer beefed the Royals’ lead up in the fifth with another blast, this time for two runs and to left field to give Kansas City a 7-1 lead.

Spangenberg hit his second homer of the game in the seventh on a solo shot to left to make the lead 7-2.

Jose Pirela hit another solo shot in the eighth to make it 7-3, but Moustakas’ second home run of the game in the ninth added one more and the Royals won the series with an 8-3 win.

The Padres will play Monday for the first time in forever as they continue their homestand and go back to the National League with a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.  First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.  Bronson Arroyo will start for the Reds against Luis Perdomo for the Padres.

Transaction news:

  • Phil Maton selected from AAA
