June 3, 2019 (Secaucus, N.J.) - It’s that time of year again.  Three straight days of draft picks joining the Padres’ already stacked farm system.  ECM Sports will have coverage of all 41 of the Padres’ draft picks. Today will cover rounds one and two and both competitive balance rounds.

Round 1, 6th overall

C.J. Abrams Jr., SS (Blessed Trinity Catholic HS, Alpharetta, GA.  Photo right via mlb.com screenshot)

The #4 prospect on mlb.com, Abrams stole over 100 bases during his high school career and is one of the fastest runners in this year’s draft, so he deserves to get drafted first.  He can play some outfield, playing center field in international competition with Team USA. He uses his speed to beat out bunts and grounders. He swing is quick too, sporting a quick left-handed stroke.  He won’t be a slugger, but his speed is something the Padres desperately need on the base pads. The biggest question is where he will be defensively. The 2019 Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year is committed to Alabama.

Round 2, 48th overall

Joshua Mears, OF (Federal Way HS, Federal Way, WA.  Photo left via mlb.com screenshot)

Mears is described as a “run-producing right fielder in a Nelson Cruz kind of mold.”  He has tremendous raw power and he’s big and strong and physical. He can launch balls a long way with his power.  He’s not a speedster, but runs well and makes good and confident throws from the outfield. Committed to Purdue.

EAST COUNTY MENTION - KYLE STOWERS, CF (STANFORD/CHRISTIAN HS) COMPETITIVE BALANCE ROUND B, 71ST OVERALL TO THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES

Stowers bat .326 in the Cape Cod League over the summer.  He has legit power from the left side, with the ability to drive the ball to all areas of the field.  He had a slow start to his junior year at Stanford, but he runs well enough. As a Patriot, he was named first-team All-CIF and all-league twice.and led the Patriots to two league championships and one state title.

Competitive Balance Round B, 73rd overall

Logan Driscoll, C (George Mason University.  Hometown: Burke, VA. Photo right via @MLBDraftTracker on Twitter)

Driscoll had the chance to hone his swing at George Mason.  He’s hit over .300 in each of his three seasons as a starter, though the Cape Cod League pitching was a struggle for him.  He shows great patience at the plate, drawing as many walks as strikeouts. Defensively, his best asset is his above average arm and he runs very well for a catcher.

Rounds 3-10 will begin at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
