June 2, 2017 (San Diego) - After a needed and, for once, well-deserved, day off, the Padres played host to the Colorado Rockies for the first weekend of June. The Rockies have lost three of their last four. German Marquez started for Colorado against Clayton Richard.
Despite their struggles, the Rockies got the upper hand of the Padres early. D.J. LeMahieu doubled in the third and Charlie Blackmon scored all the way from first. Nolan Arenado singled to score LeMahieu. Ian Desmond, who’s always a pain in the Padres’ neck, singled up the middle and Arenado scored. The Rockies tallied for three runs in the third to lead 3-0.
San Diego got on the board in the bottom of the third with a big single by Allen Cordoba that scored Chase d’Arnaud and the Rockies led 3-1.
The Rockies got their lead back to three, 4-1 in the fourth with Marquez’s sac bunt that scored Trevor Story.
The Padres narrowed it back to two with Franchy Cordero’s single that scored Ryan Schimpf. And Austin Hedges tied it up at four with a two-run blast.
In the fifth, Yangervis Solarte gave the Padres the go-ahead runs with a two-run homer of his own and the Padres took a 6-4 lead.
Cordoba made his presence felt again in the sixth with a sac fly to score Hedges. The Padres led 7-4.
The Rockies started to creep back in the seventh when Story singled to score Arenado and the score was 7-5. But Wil Myers hit a solo homer in the Padres’ half of the seventh to bring the lead back to three, 8-5. The Padres continued their winning streak with a win in the series opener with Colorado.
Game two is tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. Tyler Chatwood starts for Colorado against Jhoulys Chacin.
