June 18, 2023 (San Diego) - The Padres and Rays both vied for the series today. Yonny Chirinos started for Tampa Bay against Grossmont High alum Joe Musgrove.
Josh Lowe lined a single to center in the second to score Randy Arozarena and the Rays led 1-0 after two.
But luckily, the Rays pulled a Padres in the third inning and bungled a routine double play effort, allowing two runs to score and the Friars to take the lead. Manny Machado hit a sac fly to left to score Juan Soto and the Padres led 3-1 after three.
But the Padres Padres’d in the fourth and loaded the bases. Ex-Padre Manuel Margot hit a sac fly to center to score Luke Raley, but Rougned Odor doubled in the home half to right to score Jake Cronenworth and the Friars led 4-2 after four.
Machado singled up the middle in the fifth to score Trent Grisham and the Padres led 5-2 after five.
Margot golfed a single into right in the eighth to score Arozarena. Harold Ramirez blooped a ball that Odor couldn’t catch to score Lowe, but the Padres survived and got the series W with a 5-4 win.
