June 25, 2017 (San Diego) - The Padres have really come alive these past few games.  They already have the series, but today they went for the sweep against the Tigers.  Jordan Zimmermann started for Detroit against Clayton Richard.

Like last night, these were a different set of Padres.  The punishment started in the first when Wil Myers hit a solo homer to give San Diego a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Erick Aybar hit a homer of his own and Matt Szczur tripled to score Hunter Renfroe and make the score 3-0.

Things got worse, but the Padres kept up.  Three straight runs by the Tigers in the fourth tied the game at three.

The Padres reclaimed the lead in their half of the fourth with Richard’s sac bunt that scored Aybar and Jose Pirela’s ground-rule double that scored Renfroe and the Padres took a 5-3 lead.

But in the sixth, Nicky Castellanos knocked out a two-run homer out and the Tigers tied the game.

Mikie Mahtook put the Tigers ahead in the ninth with a two-run single and that was the finishing move.  The Tigers avoided the sweep with a 7-5 win.

The Padres get a day off tomorrow before going back to National League play when the Braves visit.  First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.  Sean Newcomb starts for Atlanta against Jhoulys Chacin.
