The Padres surged out of the gate in the second with Gary Sanchez’s two-run homer, Matt Carpenter’s run on an error and Jake Cronenworth’s RBI single in the third that scored Manny Machado and the Padres led 4-0 after three.

Carpenter hit a sac fly in the eighth that scored Machado and the Padres sent the Cubs back to Chicago with a split, winning 5-0.
