July 16, 2023 (Philadelphia) - The Phils took a series lead yesterday with a doubleheader sweep. The Padres looked to split today with Seth Lugo on the mound against Zack Wheeler for Philly.
After a two-hour rain delay, Ha-Seong Kim and Xander Bogaerts both hit home runs, Trent Grisham doubled in the fifth to score Matt Carpenter and in the home half, the Phillies started coming back. Bryson Stott and Kyle Schwarber homered and the Padres’ lead was cut to 3-2 after five.
J.T. Realmuto doubled to score two in the sixth and with the bases loaded, Drew Ellis walked to score Realmuto from third and the Phillies led 6-3 after six.
Fernando Tatis Jr. saved the day in the eighth with a two-RBI single and we were tied at five after eight.
We went to extras. Juan Soto hit a sac fly to score Trent Grisham in the 10th, but Bryce Harper singled in the home half to score Johan Rojas and we were tied at six after 10.
Schwarber hit a sac fly in the 12th to score Edmundo Sosa and the Phillies walked off the Padres to take the series with a 7-6 win.
UP NEXT
The Padres get a day off tomorrow and head up to Canada to face the Blue Jays. Game one on Tuesday is at 4:07 p.m. Grossmont High alum Joe Musgrove starts against Alek Manoah for Toronto.
