July 22, 2017 (San Francisco) - The Padres’ bats were on fire against a lackluster Giants team last night.  They looked to continue that tonight with Trevor Cahill on the mound against Jeff Samardzija for the Giants.

Brandon Belt wasn't about to let the Giants be embarrassed again and in the first, he singled to score Denard Span.  Brandon Crawford singled to score Belt and Buster Posey.  Hunter Pence doubled to score Crawford and the Giants struck for four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.

The Padres got on the board in the third when Cahill grounded out to score Franchy Cordero to make it 4-1 Giants.

Pence singled in the third to score Belt and increase the lead to 5-1.

Hector Sanchez, who has been a domineering force on the Padres, hit a solo homer in the fourth to make it 5-2.

But Gorkys Hernandez scored on a wild pitch in the Giants’ half of the fourth to force Cahill out of the game and make it 6-2.

Jose Pirela brought the Padres to within three in the fifth with a single that scored Matt Szczur.  Sanchez doubled to score Carlos Asuaje and put Samardzija out of business.  Josh Osich came in and got Cory Spangenberg to ground out, but Wil Myers came home and that was the end of Osich.  Cody Gearrin came in and finally finished the inning, but the Padres now only trailed by one, 6-5.

The Padres finally tied the game in the sixth when Asuaje singled and scored Craig Stammen and we had a new ballgame.

But not for long.  Myers broke the tie with a solo homer in the seventh to make it 7-6 and Pirela tripled in the eighth to score Szczur.  Asuaje singled to score Pirela and the Padres took a 9-6 lead.

The Padres thought they had it made, but the Giants weren't done yet.  Crawford singled to score Buster Posey and Conor Gillaspie blasted a two-run game-tying home run and it was time for extra innings.

It took till the 11th, but Szczur singled to score Hunter Renfroe, Pirela singled to score Erick Aybar and Asuaje singled to score Szczur and the Padres ended an extra inning romp with the Giants with a 12-9 win and a series win.

Game three is today at 1:05 p.m.  Luis Perdomo will start against Matt Moore for the Giants.
