August 6, 2017 (Pittsburgh) - Whoever won today’s game won the series, so the Padres made sure to make good with Clayton Richard on the mound against Jameson Taillon for the Pirates.
The Padres got started right away again. Cory Spangenberg singled to score Manuel Margot. A wild pitch by Taillon allowed Wil Myers to steal second and Spangenberg to score and the Padres took a 2-0 lead.
Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates on the board in the third with a single that scored Chris Stewart. And with the bases loaded, the Padres’ worst fear was realized. Jose Osuna, who's been a thorn in Padres pitching’s side this weekend, doubled to score a huge three runs and give the Pirates the lead, 4-2.
All seemed lost until the ninth. The Buccos had the game in the bag with two outs until Margot came to the plate and singled to score two runs that tied the game and sent us to extra innings.
It all ended in the 12th. On the first batter. One one swing of the bat. Buddy Baumann threw a pitch down the middle to Sean Rodriguez--just reacquired by the Pirates--and he destroyed it. To left field it went and into the bleachers. The Pirates had won the game and the series on one swing. 5-4 was the final score after the Padres had threatened in the 11th and 12th with nothing to show for it.
The Padres continue their 10-game road trip tomorrow with a stop in Cincinnati. First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. Jhoulys Chacin starts against Tim Adleman for the Reds.
