June 10, 2017 (San Diego) - The Padres got a good start to the weekend series with the Royals yesterday, but could they keep it going today knowing that they were on national TV?  We’d find out as Ian Kennedy started for Kansas City against Miguel Diaz, a guy who normally doesn’t start, but got the nod today.

The Padres got one lone run in the first:  a homer from Jose Pirela to give the good guys a 1-0 lead.

Alcides Escobar tied the game in the fifth with a homer, but the Padres got the lead right back in their half of the fifth with Pirela’s double that scored two.  Yangervis Solarte singled to score Pirela and the Padres were up 4-1.

Lorenzo Cain homered in the sixth to make the score 4-2.

The Royals crept closer.  Whit Merrifield singled in the seventh to score Alex Gordon to make the score 4-3.

The Padres kept up.  Solarte singled to left to score Pirela to make it 5-3.

But in the eighth, things took a turn for the worse.  First, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer to left center to tie the game.  Salvador Perez joined the home run train with his 13th to put the Royals on top for the first time.  Merrifield hit a sac fly, but an error by Franchy Cordero scored two runs.  Cain came up to bat and killed Abel with a grand slam to give the Royals a whopping 12-5 lead.

The Padres did get one more run in the eighth with Erick Aybar’s RBI single, but the Royals took game two in commanding fashion with a 12-6 win to even the series.

The series finale is tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.  Jake Junis will start for the Royals against Dinelson Lamet for the Padres.
