East County Magazine Catches Up With Goalie of SDSU Women’s Water Polo Team

By Ryan Schuler

March 20, 2012 (San Diego)--San Diego State senior goalie Kelly Campoli is no stranger to individual awards. As a three-time team Most Valuable Player and All-CIF selection coming out of El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif., expectations were high for Campoli as she continued her water polo career at SDSU.

She has delivered on those expectations. Not only does she hold the record career saves, but in each of her previous three seasons guarding the net for the Aztecs, Campoli has been named an ACWPC Honorable Mention All-American.

But water polo is not life for Campoli. She enjoys having a good time outside of the water and in the classroom. Twice, she has been named to the All-MPSF Academic Team. East County Magazine caught up with Campoli to see what she likes to do in her free time and to whom she attributes her success in the water.

Why San Diego State?
“Location and the team.  I decided to come here (SDSU) because of the girls and the coaching staff. Also, just the school is amazing.”

How did you come to play water polo?
“I’ve always been involved with sports. I played soccer and basketball when I was younger, but my brother played water polo in high school. I tried it in sixth grade and liked it, so I just continued with it.”

What are your expectations for the rest of the season?
“We have a month left. We need to keep up the momentum the rest of the season. We have a lot of potential, and we have a lot of fight in us still, so we expect to win and hopefully still try to get a bid in the NCAA Tournament.”

To whom do you attribute your success?
“Outside of the water, I would say my dad. Ever since high school, he would send me inspirational quotes every single day before a game. He has been there for me since day one. Inside of the water, I would say my teammates. They are the ones that make me better.”

Enough about water polo. What do you like to do in your free time?
“I like to play other sports. I still love playing basketball. I also like hanging out with friends, going to the beach, and shopping. Just all of the typical things.”
