April 24, 2023 (El Cajon) - After record rainfalls across Southern California this winter, potholes are a massive issue for commuters everywhere. The City of El Cajon is taking on the issue of potholes head-on. Last week, the City challenged residents and businesses through a social media video to track down and report as many potholes as possible using the My El Cajon app. This week, the City is keeping up with its commitment to its residents by addressing every reported issue and filling hundreds of potholes across the city streets.

To assist the Public Works Department with the massive undertaking, all City departments offered employee labor, having the entire City government working together to tackle this issue. Three City Council members, Steve Goble, Michelle Metschel, and Phil Ortiz, were also in attendance working on teams to repair the roads.

The City encourages residents to download the My El Cajon App on their smartphones to report issues such as graffiti, trash dumping, illegal encampments, potholes, and streetlights that are out. The app automatically geotags the location, making reporting quick and easy.

"We have empowered our residents with an easy-to-use app, and we have all City departments' commitments to make sure each resident's request is addressed within days, not weeks," stated Chris Berg, the City's Marketing and Engagement Manager. "This allows every citizen of El Cajon the ability to direct resources where they need it most."

The City has roughly 400 miles of street lanes, and pothole requests were 5x higher this year due to excessive rainfall. Potholes are caused by water percolating through cracks in the roadway caused by traffic, utility repairs, or heat and sun. As the water washes away the sub-base underneath the street, the pavement eventually collapses in those places.

The City will be filling potholes every day through Friday, April 28.
