SWAT STANDOFF IN LEMON GROVE ENDS AS SUSPECT SURRENDERS

 

Update 3:15 p.m. -- The seven-hour SWAT standoff has ended. According to the Sheriff's Dept., the suspect, Brandon Andrade, walked out of the house and surrendered after deputies used chemical agents. Mental Health Clinicians with the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) will evaluate Andrade before he is booked into San Diego Central Jail. He is expected to face three counts of attempted murder charges. The evacuation notification and road closures will be lifted in an hour.

May 25, 2023 (Lemon Grove) – The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is working to peacefully resolve a SWAT standoff in Lemon Grove. A suspect has barricaded himself inside his home and is refusing to come out after firing multiple shots and injuring a neighbor. 

Skyline Drive between Longdale Drive and Palm Street is closed as deputies continue to negotiate with the suspect, who may have other weapons. Deputies evacuated eight homes in the neighborhood. Lemon Grove Early Childhood Education Center was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

April 30, 2023 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s golf team won its second straight Mountain West Championship, shattering the tournament record with a 60-under-par 804 Sunday at the par-72, 7,194-yard OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona. Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) captured medalist honors at 19-under 197 after beating Colorado State’s Christoph Bleier in a playoff and the Aztecs had four of the top-7 overall finishers.

April 30, 2023 (San Diego) - No. 24 San Diego State water polo led 4-3 late in the first period but struggled to find the back of the cage from there and lost 14-6 to LMU in the third-place game of the 2023 Golden Coast Conference Tournament on Sunday morning at Aztec Aquaplex. The loss means the Aztecs finish in fourth place in the tournament.

April 30, 2023 (Boise) - Jillian Celis homered and had a career-high five RBIs to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 10-1, run-rule victory in six innings Saturday afternoon at Dona Larsen Park in Boise, Idaho. The Aztecs (32-12, 16-5 MW) clinched the series with the win and are now in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings, one game ahead of the Broncos (28-14, 13-4 MW).

SDSU won a set on five singles courts, but it was not enough in a season-ending 4-2 loss.

GI FILM FESTIVAL SAN DIEGO OPENS MAY 15 WITH TRIO OF LOCAL DOCUMENTARIES

April 26, 2023 (San Diego) -- The 2023 GI Film Festival San Diego opens Monday, May 15 starting at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in Balboa Park, and runs through Saturday, May 20. Opening Night will feature a trio of local films, as well as a reception where festival guests can socialize over small bites and refreshments. Tickets for Opening Night cost $25 for general admission and $20 for military, veterans or KPBS members. All tickets can be purchased online now at GIFilmFestivalSD.org.

April 24, 2023 (El Cajon) - After record rainfalls across Southern California this winter, potholes are a massive issue for commuters everywhere. The City of El Cajon is taking on the issue of potholes head-on. Last week, the City challenged residents and businesses through a social media video to track down and report as many potholes as possible using the My El Cajon app. This week, the City is keeping up with its commitment to its residents by addressing every reported issue and filling hundreds of potholes across the city streets.
