April 23, 2023 (San Diego) -  San Diego State rallied for a 5-2 victory over New Mexico to complete a series sweep Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at SDSU Softball Stadium. It was the 30th win of the season for the Aztecs (30-12, 14-5 MW), who captured their 10th consecutive home game.

WOMAN DIES IN RAMONA TRAILER FIRE

April 23, 2023 (Ramona)-- The Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit is investigating a deadly fire in the unincorporated area of Ramona.

It happened on Saturday, April 22 just after 1 p.m. in the 17000 block of Voorhes Lane. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department received calls about a travel trailer on fire. 

Deputies and firefighters from Cal Fire/San Diego County Fire arrived to find the trailer fully engulfed and soon after unfortunately found a deceased woman inside the trailer.

LA MESA VILLAGE ASSOCIATION HAS ANNOUNCED THEY ARE READY FOR THE PUBLIC TO PAINT TILES FOR THE NEW DOWNTOWN SIGN

April 19, 2023 (La Mesa) -- On Thursday afternoon, the La Mesa Village Association (LMVA) announced that it has reached full funding for the new La Mesa Downtown District sign and will enter the next phase of the project – tile painting. 

“We are truly grateful to the community for helping us raise the funds necessary for this project,” says Theresa Favro, LMVA President. “We know everyone is very excited to start painting their tiles and see them proudly displayed for years to come!”

WILDFLOWERS- JEWELS OF THE BACKCOUNTRY: JULIAN WOMAN’S CLUB PRESENTS 97TH ANNUAL WILDFLOWER SHOW

April 23, 2023 (Julian) -- The Julian Woman’s Club will present The 96th Annual Wildflower Show at the Clubhouse of the Julian Women’s Club (2607 C Street Julian) on Friday May 5 and Saturday May 6, from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. both days.

For two days, club members collect specimens from the over 850 plant species in the area surrounding Julian. The plant display ranges from desert cacti to high mountain dogwood gathered in a 15 mile radius from the historic old mining town of Julian. Permission to collect is obtained from private property owners.

Each year flowers vary depending on weather and rainfall. The display is always colorful and informative as plants are labeled and arranged by area of origin.

Rattlesnakes are coming out and I’m not talking about those “special” people in your life personally or professionally that slither around ready to take a swipe at you!

Rattlesnakes are found in most U.S. states, but California is “blessed” with more than its fair share. Rattlesnake season in California starts in April, however they can start as early as March and runs through October.

SDSU WATER POLO DOWNED FOR HARPER CUP IN FINAL SECONDS

April 23, 2023 (La Jolla) - The No. 24 ranked San Diego State water polo team was held off the scoreboard board in the second quarter, while surrendering five goals to No. 14 UC San Diego and ultimately lost 10-9 on a goal with three seconds to play in the 21st edition of the Harper Cup on Sunday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

April 22, 2023 (Colorado Springs) - The San Diego State men’s tennis played its regular season finale at Air Force on Saturday, April 22. Trailing the Falcons by just one match in the conference standings, today’s competition provided SDSU with a chance to leapfrog Air Force and take the sixth seed in this week’s Mountain West Championships. The Aztecs capitalized on the opportunity, taking the doubles point and winning three singles matches to earn a 4-2 victory.

Lehman threw six innings of three hit ball to earn her 10th win of the season.

SDSU won the doubles point, but were edged out in singles play on Saturday.

She started a nonprofit, Backcountry Against Dumps and chaired the Boulevard Planning Group every year since joining it in 1991. She’s filed countless lawsuits against a seemingly endless array of Goliath-scale projects and organized community opposition after San Diego’s East County was declared an energy corridor by the federal government.

April 21, 2023 (San Diego) - Allie Light was lights out in the circle on Friday night, throwing a complete game for the Aztecs, while Jillian Celis provided a timely two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to lead San Diego State to a 4-1 win over New Mexico in game one of the series at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs have now won 12 of their last 14 games.

POTRERO MAN KILED IN HEAD-ON CRASH ON BUCKMAN SPRINGS ROAD

April 21, 2023 (Potrero) – A 62-year-old Potrero man died of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Buckman Springs Road north of Coral Canyon Trail in Pine Valley.
 
The victim was driving a Toyota pickup southbound on Buckman Springs Road with his wife in the passenger seat the afternoon of April 7 when another Toyota pickup lost control and crossed the center line, causing a head-on collision.

April 21, 2023 (Las Vegas) - San Diego State women's tennis recorded their fourth sweep of the season on Saturday morning, taking down San Jose State 4-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. The Aztecs earned the sweep even without the likes of two of their top three singles players.

THIRD RAMONA AMBULANCE AND CREW ARE BUSY HELPING RESIDENTS

April 21, 2023 (La Mesa) -- A new ambulance with its crew and services added by the San Diego County Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE is seeing a great deal of use. County Fire accepted the transfer of responsibility for fire protection and emergency medical services in Ramona last August. The change brought a third fire department paramedic ambulance and additional firefighter staffing enhancements to the Ramona service area. 

The new paramedic ambulance has been dispatched 315 times and has taken 148 patients to area hospitals. Assigned to Fire Station 82, on Dye Road, the paramedic ambulance has full-time staffing with two firefighter paramedics 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Due to residential and business development along with population growth, there have been steady increases in 911 emergencies.
