June 2, 2024 (Spring Valley) -- Friends of East County Arts, Inc. (Friends), a respected philanthropic organization that funds visual and performing arts (VAPA) educational programs in East San Diego County, recently celebrated Heather Hargett, music teacher from Mount Miguel High School, as the recipient of the Spirit of the Arts Award. The recognition was held on May 24 at Mt. Miguel High School during their Spring Pops Concert in front of parents, staff members, administration and students.
The Spirit of the Arts Award is not given every year, but highlights a Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) teacher who has demonstrated outstanding arts instruction under challenging conditions. Hargett teaches band, choir, orchestra, piano, guard, guitar and drumline, and, in some cases, instructs several classes in the same class period. Members of Friends were impressed by her ability to juggle curriculum and instruction with no outside help and still produce outstanding programs and performances. Her students are enthusiastically involved in their learning and many of them take more than one music class per semester.
Hargett puts on multiple concerts throughout the school year, has the drumline participate in parades, and takes her students to State competitions where they regularly bring home winning trophies. She invites alumni to come back and join in combined concerts which gives students additional role modeling from advanced and often professional musicians.
Friends gave Hargett a check for $750 as a token of gratitude for her tireless and extraordinary commitment to music education and for keeping VAPA education alive in East County San Diego.
