October 1, 2012 (Jacumba) – “There is hope for the families who were affected by the wildland fire,” says Lorrie Ostrander, who has been organizing a fundraiser to help the 11 families who lost their homes in the Shockey Fire.  “With the help of Alpine Albertsons, Jacumba Women's Club, Jacumba Lounge, Manzanita Diner and other local residents, we are having a dinner." Donations will benefit the families who lost everything, she added.

The benefit dinner will be held on Friday, October 12 from 4-8 p.m. at the Jacumba Highland Senior Center, 44681 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba 91934.  A $5 donation at the door is requested.

Donations can also be sent to:

Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, San Diego Service Center, 6727  Flanders Dr.  Suite 102, San Diego, CA.  92121 (write Shockey Fire on the bottom of the check); (858) 546-0578.

Ostrander urges readers to hold yard sales or take up a collection on their block to help fill the needs of those who lost everything.  Even a little effort can make a big difference.

"There was a dog that broke its leg in the fire," Ostrander said, noting that the owner faced large veterinary bills even after a veterinarian donated a portion of the fees.  "Two little girls set up a lemonade stand downtown," she said, adding that hundreds of dollars were raised.

While cash is needed most to help families relocate to temporary homes, gift cards are also helpful, such as gift cards for groceries, department stores, home stores, pet stores etc.  Some of the displaced families have pets, including a cat that suffered serious burns in the wildfire.
