Ron Murphy passed away at age 48

February 20, 2012 (La Mesa) Former Grossmont High School head football coach Ron Murphy passed away on Tuesday after a battle with skin cancer. Murphy was 48 years old.
 
Grossmont High School dedicated its basketball game against Helix High School in honor of Murphy. Grossmont High School also held a celebration of Murphy’s life on Saturday morning at the football field on campus.

Also a special education teacher, Murphy formerly taught at Santana High School before joining Grossmont.

 
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Murphy is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dani; daughter Whitney, 24; sons Jordan, 21, and Luke, 19; and granddaughter Kennedy Antoinette, 6 months.
 
"I was impressed with his passion about life and devotion to kids and must say that he exceeded my expectations in every way," former Grossmont principal Theresa Kemper, who hired Murphy as a coach and special education teacher said, Patch.com reported. “He was better than good at both; he was great.”
