Buth named honoree for second time this season
April 4, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s tennis senior Jana Buth (Kaiserslautern, Germany) has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. This is the second career weekly conference honor for Buth, who also won the award on Jan. 31, 2018 for her perfect singles and doubles records earlier this season.
This week’s honor marks the first time an Aztec women’s tennis player has been chosen for more than one weekly award in a season since 2014, when then-senior Laura Antonaña Iriarte earned MW POTW three times during the 2013-14 campaign.
Buth has spent her senior season in the No. 1 singles position for all dual matches and is in her second season of consistent top-seed play in both singles and doubles for the Aztecs. Last week at UNLV, Buth claimed an impressive straight-set victory (6-2, 6-1) over three-time 2018 MW POTW and 53rd-ranked Aiwen Zhu, marking consecutive singles wins over ranked opponents for Buth after she defeated No. 125 Genevieve Zeidan (CSUF) the week prior.
Buth and doubles partner senior Paola Diaz also claimed a 6-3 win over UNLV’s Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li to help the Aztecs claim the doubles point against the Rebels. With a 10-6 dual doubles record, Buth and Diaz have been big contributors to the Aztecs' 11 total doubles points in 17 matches this season.
Up next, SDSU travels to Long Beach State on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. before returning to the Aztec Tennis Center Sunday, April 8 to host San Francisco at 2 p.m.
