February 1, 2019 (La Mesa) – The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “A Healthy Outlook on Aging, Medicines, Alcohol, Tobacco” from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 27.  The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

The presenter on February 27 will be Matthew Parcasio with the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services, Outreach and Education. Parcasio has a master’s degree in Gerontology. He gained his knowledge of caring for older adults and adults with disabilities through his experience working in adult day healthcare, assisted living memory care and non-medical home care settings. Parcasio said he expresses his passion for helping others in the support, education and resources he provides older adults, dependent adults and their families in San Diego.;

According to Kathy Quinn, Herrick Library director, the presentation will provide awareness of medicines that do not mix well with other prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal and vitamin supplements and alcohol.

“The presentation will include information on alcohol usage and a self-assessment tool,” said Quinn. “Tobacco and smoking cessation resources also will be provided. Emphasis will be place placed on the importance of recovery and prevention. Most of the time, medicines make our lives better. They reduce aches and pains, fight infections, and control problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes. But medicines can also cause unwanted reactions. Interactions with other drugs, supplements, or alcohol can change how the drug works, making a drug less effective, causing unexpected side effects, or increasing the action of a drug.”

The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet. The library is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County.
