City aims to attract, retain businesses in challenging economic times

February 20, 2010 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa… Seeking to encourage businesses to remain in La Mesa and attract new businesses to the community, the City of La Mesa has launched a redesigned economic development webpage at www.cityoflamesa.com/economicdevelopment aimed at providing up-to-date information including listings of space available, guides for property owners and start-up businesses.

While the City benefits from a strong retail base, it has suffered the loss of significant retailers, such as Circuit City and Linens ‘N Things, and sales from remaining retailers are down. Like other California cities, La Mesa relies on retail generated sales and use taxes as a critical source of revenue to provide important services to the community.

Mary England, President and CEO of the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce feels the website is a major step forward for the City. "The page provides critical information for any company looking to move their business to La Mesa and offers a great snapshot of the City's important demographics when a business is deciding on whether La Mesa would be a good fit for them. The City’s web page will be an important tool the Chamber can use as it fields calls from companies asking about starting a business in La Mesa.”

Burnham Company’s Kyle Clark, a prominent commercial real estate broker specializing in East County, believes the City is heading in the right direction. “I think that this web page is a terrific tool for any tenant considering La Mesa for their business. The ability to search for leasable space alternatives by size is convenient and even more so is the ability to link directly to zoning requirements to see where they can actually locate,” says Clark.

The City is also actively reaching out to major national tenants. Though many companies remain in a wait-and-see mode in regards to expansion, others are actively seeking strategic expansion opportunities and the City is working to identify these companies and contact them directly.

“We have to be aggressive in promoting La Mesa’s business opportunities. The new web page is a useful tool we can use to share information about La Mesa’s retail trade area and bolster the commercial real estate sector,” concluded Mayor Art Madrid.
