October 15, 2023 (Reno) - San Diego State women’s soccer suffered their first loss in Mountain West play, falling 3-2 at Nevada on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs rallied for a late comeback attempt scoring twice in the final four minutes, but ultimately ran out of time against the Wolfpack

San Diego State (11-3-2, 6-1-1 MWC) fell behind early on converted penalty kick for Nevada (6-6-5, 4-3-1 MWC) in the 16th minute. The PK was awarded after the Aztecs were called for a handball in the box.

After the goal, the SDSU offense turned it up a notch recording four shots before the break with three coming in a one-minute span around 20th minute of play. Alexys Ocampo fired the first shot on goal for the Aztecs but it was saved by the Wolfpack keeper, who finished the game with three.

The second half turned into a lot of offense as Nevada scored their second goal fresh out of the break in the 50th minute and added their third in the 72nd, both coming off the left foot of Emily Rich.

Despite playing the final 26 minutes a player down, the Aztecs continued to battle attempting a late comeback. With just over three minutes left to play, Trinity Coker sent a missile of a shot top shelf to break the shutout. The score goes as her second goal of the season and fourth of her career.

Right before the one-minute remaining announcement, San Diego State netted another goal. Kiera Utush launched a long ball down field, off a defender’s head and into the back of the net. It goes as her second goal of the season, and eighth of her career.

Unfortunately, there just was not enough time for the Aztecs to continue to rally around the momentum and finish off the comeback, falling to the Wolfpack, 3-2.

The result snaps San Diego State’s 10-match unbeaten streak that began back on Sept. 3. The streak saw the Aztecs post a 9-0-1 record over that span including their 6-0-1 start to Mountain West play and has them sitting top table in the conference standings.

Next Game: The Aztecs return home for their next match, hosting Wyoming on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
