Update 9 p.m.  Sam DiGiovanna, our  "Chief's Corner" columnist, sent us this report and photo:  The fire has scorched 1,000 acres and is 15% contained.  Approximately 230 residents were forced to evacuate a housing unit near Lake O'Neil base, officials said. Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton was not threatened by the fire, but a power outage prompted officials to evacuate about 30 patients to other hospitals in the area and stop accepting new patients.

Update 6:05 p.m. -- The blaze is now 250 acres; some residents and patients at the base hospital are being evacuated, U-T San Diego reports.

October 5, 2013 (Oceanside) --  If you're seeing smoke or hearing firefighting planes overhead, they're likely bound for a major brush fire burning on Camp Pendleton.  The blaze has charred 110 acres and engulfed a trailer, with more structures threatened on De Luz Road as of late this afternoon, multiple sources have informed ECM.
