November 7, 2018 (La Mesa) --  La Mesa Voters have overwhelmingly approved Measure V by a 74.26% to 25.64% margin with 15% of precincts counted.  The measure will levy an excise tax on cannabis dispensaries.

Medical dispensaries are currently legal in La Mesa but recreational dispensaries are not.  The wording of Measure V, however, will also allow the city to tax recreational dispensaries if the latter is ever legalized by either a future ballot initiative or an ordinance enacted by the City Council.

The measure aims to create a new revenue stream for La Mesa, which like all local cities is struggling to balance its budget while dealing with rising pension costs.
