Aztecs earned first place in all but two events over three-day invitational

November 19, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State swimming team finished the A3 Invitational in strong fashion Saturday evening, grabbing first place in five of six events on the final day of action at the Aztec Aquaplex. McKenna Meyer, who captured first place in each of the three finals she competed in while posting a first-place time in the 200 IM preliminaries on Thursday and being a part of a first-place 800 free relay team on Friday, earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for being the highest single-point getter for all female competitors. The Aztecs had a 153.5 point lead heading into the final day, but as of early Sunday morning, official team results are still to be recalculated.
Rachael Kelch used a season-best 2:00.06 in the 200 back to grab SDSU’s first top finish of the night. Kelch barely edged out teammate Gianna Haugen, who posted a career-best time of 2:00.30 to finish in second place.
Meyer earned her third first-place finish of the event, posting a new personal best with a 16:35.87 in the 1650 free. The time for Meyer is the third fastest in school history, while also being a top-15 time in the nation this year.
In the following event, Alma Thormalm took home the first-place time in the 100 free, posting a 2017-18 best time of 50.52. The Aztecs earned three of the top for spots in the 200 fly, led by Frida Berggren who posted a season-best 1:59.32. Berggren was followed by Kelch (2:01.78) and Courtney Vincent (2:03.38), who grabbed second and fourth place honors, respectively.
SDSU concluded the event with a first-place time in the 400 free relay, with Klara Thormalm, Peyton Wilson, Alma Thormalm, and Summer Harrison combining for a time of 3:25.00 – just edging the University of San Diego, which finished in second and .30 seconds behind SDSU.
The Aztecs finished the three-day event having earned first place in all but two events. Should team results hold true after yesterday’s leaderboard, the Aztecs would earn their second A3 Invitational crown in the last four years, having also won in 2014.
