April 22, 2016 (San Diego) - The Redbirds from St. Louis flew into San Diego and put Adam Wainwright up against Andrew Cashner on the mound.

The Padres kicked things off in the bottom of the first with Wil Myers’ solo home run and took a 1-0 lead.

After some horrible fielding by the Cardinals that allowed Cashner and Jon Jay to reach base, Myers finished the job and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Cashner and make the score 2-0 Padres.

The Cardinals got one back in the fourth with Randal Grichuk’s nice solo homer to center and the Pads’ lead was cut to one at 2-1.

In the Padres’ half of the fourth, Adam Rosales doubled to right and drove Jemile Weeks and the Padres’ lead was back to two at 3-1.

In the seventh, Myers doubled and Jay scored and the Padres extended their lead by one.  4-1 San Diego.

A low scoring game ended with a Padres win.  4-1 is the final score.  The Padres and Cards take the field again tomorrow night, with the first pitch at 5:40 p.m. Rookie Cesar Vargas will take the hill for San Diego against Michael Wacha for St. Louis.

In transaction news, the Padres called up outfielder Jose Pirela from AAA and optioned Leonel Campos back to the Chihuahuas.
