March 12, 2024 (San Diego) – Kathryn “Kathy” Lynn Carpenter, East County Magazine’s theater reviewer for the past 15 years, passed away on September 16, 2023, two days after her 65th birthday.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of Kathy’s passing last fall,” said ECM editor Miriam Raftery. “Kathy was a kind-hearted person and a valued member of our team who loved showcasing the works of community and youth theaters, high school and college performances, as well as highlighting the talents of young actors. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and all who loved her. This is a loss to the entire San Diego theatrical community.”
Born Sept. 14, 1958, in Hemet, she was the daughter of Joe and Linda Carpenter and the oldest of six children. After graduating high school, she moved to San Diego with her family. She dedicated much of her life to caring for her extensive family including nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews.
As a child ,she loved going to movies and plays. She found joy in becoming a theater critic, writing hundreds of reviews for several local publications. She had an entrepreneurial spirit, as part owner of Carpenter Family Game Products. She was also a dedicated parishioner at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, according to an obituary published at Abbey Cremation and Funeral Services.
Ironically, her last post on Facebook came on Sept. 11, five days before she died, when she praised North County Repertory Theatre's productoin of "The Angel Next Door."
Her family wrote on her obituary's tribute wall, "Kathy was preceded in death by her dad Joe. Together under God's grace they will now watch over their earthly family, mom, sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces,aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends. We Love & Celebrate You Kathy!! You’re a true inspiration, here, beyond and always.”
