PASSAGES: NAVY VETERAN AND MOUNT HELIX RESIDENT SYLVESTER J. YANTA

February 18, 2013 (La Mesa) – Sylvester J. Yanta, a resident of the Mount Helix area, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013.   A veteran of the U.S. Navy who served his country for 20 years, he later worked for the State of California until his retirement.

He was born December 30, 1920 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Thomas and Mary Yanta, one of 12 children.  He is survived by his wife, Esther Sabo Yanta, and his two daughters, Nina Monrreal and Paula Butler, two grandchildren, one great-grandson, one brother and four sisters.

Yanta was a lifestime member of the VFW Post 1512 and also a member of the Elks Lodge 1812. He will be best remembered for his love for his family, graet food, dancing and sports. 

Services were held on February 15 at Santa Sophia Catholic Church in Spring Valley. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Good Samaritan Retirement Center, 1515 Jamacha Way, El Cajon, CA 92019.

Sylvester was our neighbor.

 I remember how happy he and Esther were when we first moved here and met them.  They loved ballroom dancing and had added a dance floor to their home. We'd often see the light on into the wee hours of the morning while they danced the night away.  Farewell, Sylvester.
