August 18, 2016 (San Diego) – After an absolutely dismal series against the AL East, the Padres were ready to return home to Petco Park to face the Diamondbacks.  Paul Clemens started on the mound for San Diego against Archie Bradley for Arizona.

The Dbacks started the affair in the first with a wild pitch by Clemens that scored Jean Segura for a 1-0 lead. Wellington Castillo singled and scored Paul Goldschmidt and the Dbacks went up 2-0 early.

In the Padres’ half of the first, they chipped away with Yangervis Solarte’s sac groundout that scored Travis Jankowski and the score was 2-1.

In the third, Wil Myers singled to score Jankowski and the game was tied at two.  Alex Dickerson reached on a force attempt, scoring Myers and the Padres took a 3-2 lead.  Christian Bethancourt singled, scoring Solarte and Dickerson and the Padres took a commanding 5-2 lead.  Or so everyone thought.

In the fifth, Castillo single, scoring Goldschmidt and the lead was cut to two at 5-3.

And in the sixth, the lead was no more.  Segura hit a two-run shot to center that tied the game at 5.

But the Padres got the lead back in their half of the sixth on a passed ball that scored pinch hitter Edwin Jackson and the Padres took the lead again, 6-5.

But it went away again in the seventh when Mitch Haniger doubled and scored Yasmany Tomas to tie the game at six.

And in the eighth, Michael Bourn’s single to score Rickie Weeks Jr. after a leadoff walk to lead 7-6.

But in the Padres’ half of the eighth, the Poway kid came up big again.  Dickerson doubled with the bases loaded, scoring three and the Padres went up 9-7.

It wasn’t over yet.  In the ninth, Haniger singled to score Jake Lamb and the score was one run, 9-8.  But the Padres hold on and take game one on a much-needed homecoming.

Later start time tomorrow night at 7:40 p.m.  The Padres will face Zach Greinke and the snakes will face Jarred Cosart.
