June 23, 2024 (Del Mar) -- On Sunday, June 30, the San Diego County Fair is holding a Pow Wow for the first time in history with Native American drumming, dancing, food and arts and crafts. The event provides an opportunity for community members to celebrate the diversity and contributions of the Native American community.
The San Diego County Fair and the SDC Fair Pow Wow Committee will hold its inaugural pow wow honoring Native American traditions and celebrating the spirit of unity and diversity that defines our community.
The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Del Mar Arena inside of the San Diego County Fair, at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014. Parking and fair entrance fees apply.
The event will include Kumeyaay bird singers, Aztec dancers, speeches, Native American singing/drumming and inter-tribal dancing. A major highlight of the event will be the grand entry, which takes place at 1:30pm, where all of the dancers enter the dance arena followed immediately by speeches from Native American dignitaries.
A Pow Wow is a gathering with dances held by many Native American and First Nations communities. By hosting the Pow Wow, the San Diego County Fair proudly demonstrates its unwavering support and solidarity with all members of the community. Native American Pow Wows help to foster unity within the community. The Pow Wow also help to promote awareness of Native American cultures and visibility of Native American peoples who are often marginalized and underrepresented. Lastly, the Pow Wow bolsters Native American businesses, who will be providing unique arts, crafts, and foods at the gathering.
