East County News Service

August 25, 2020 (El Cajon, CA) — Amelie Simpson, a junior at Valhalla High School, has been named one of San Diego’s most remarkable teens. The award, presented annually by the San Diego Public Defender’s Office and the San Diego Public Defender Youth Council, honors teen accomplishments in a wide range of categories, including civic involvement, leadership, and the arts.

Nominated by the Mitchell Thorp Foundation, Simpson is one of 25 teens recognized this year for their achievements. Beth Thorp, founder and executive director of the Mitchell Thorp Foundation, recommended Simpson for the award saying, “While Amelie’s musical abilities standout publicly, the majority of her other accomplishments, especially her dedication to community service and academic excellence go unnoticed because of her humility.”

The East County teen is a singer and songwriter, who performs at venues throughout San Diego, including the House of Blues, the San Diego County Fair, Grossmont Center, and the Helix Brewing Company. Ron Troyano, founder of Alchemy San Diego, who manages events for Seaport Village said, ”We feature music from many local performers and one of our favorites is Amelie Simpson, a true talent.”

GAME ON AT THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR

By Miriam Raftery

June 7, 2013 (San Diego) -- East County Magazine took a sneak-preview tour of the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar, which opens June 8 and runs through July 4.  "Game on" is the theme at this year's fair, featuring classic game shows--and some "gamey" fare for tasting.

Highlights from East County featured at this year's fair include the ever-popular Firefighters Demolition Derby on opening day, June 8 (when you can also take in a Beach Boys concert) and a Wine Festival June 15 where you can savor the fruits of labors from many local vineyards and wineries.

Whetting our appetites, our team of "East County Eaters" sampled an array of fair foods from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried pickles.  The dish that got a thumbs up from our voracious eaters? Wild boar kebobs. (Photo right) View their video "review" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBCMwQTvKLc&feature=youtu.be.

June 15 (Del Mar)--The San Diego County Fair is not just games and fun. It also includes the very serious business of judging breeding stock for cattle and other livestock. This is what county fairs used to be centered around. So going to the livestock section is a window to the past.

June 10, 2012 (San Diego County) – It was a tough job, but someone had to do it. So we took a team of our reporters and photographers to a media night preview of the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar, which opened yesterday.  We watched bungee jumpers, an acrobatic dog, and 4-H kids with pigs and goats. We savored our fill of fair food. Plus we met up with some East County participants--including Chief Don Butz and the Viejas firefighters, who showed off the shark-toothed, souped-up car they will be driving in the demolition derby on June 16.

Here are our helpful hints and highlights for your fair-going enjoyment this season:
