Lake Murray Playground Project community-build July 14

July 7, 2012 (San Diego) --  The San Diego Half Marathon, a one-of-a kind race and fundraising event with 100 percent of its net proceeds benefiting local charities, today proudly announced that $100,000 is being donated to local San Diego-area charities from its hugely successful inaugural race last March. San Diego-area charity partners from the 2012 race include Lake Murray Playground Project, San Diego Police Department Communications Division Kitchen/Break room Renovation, Toys for Joy, Robb Field and Hickman Field.

On July 2nd, the Lake Murray Playground Project broke ground thanks to funds raised and donated by the San Diego Half Marathon. A community-funded and developed project, the playground has been a work in progress for three years and finally has the funding needed to begin rebuilding on Lake Murray’s north shore. A community-build of the playground will take place on July 14, bringing volunteers and other members of the Lake Murray community together to build a children’s recreation area that is accessible, challenging and fun.

"The mission of the San Diego Half Marathon is a heartwarming change, putting the community first rather than the bottom line," said Tracy Dahlkamp, director of the Lake Murray Playground Project. "Its $25,000 donation could not have come at a better time, enabling us to complete our three-year dream of building a playground for our community."

The inaugural 2012 San Diego Half Marathon was an overwhelming success, with more than $100,000 raised and donated directly from the race for community service projects. In addition to the Lake Murray Playground Project, the following community service projects are among those receiving donated funds from the San Diego Half Marathon:
  • Toys for Joy: $25,000 for events to provide toys, food and clothing to San Diego’s less fortunate around the holidays
  • Hickman Field: $25,000 for upgrades to the public park and fields in Clairemont
  • San Diego Police Department Communications Division Kitchen/Breakroom Renovation: $10,000 to provide much-needed renovation and furniture for a break room in disrepair, vital to keeping emergency personnel awake and alert
  • Robb Field: $10,000 for upgrades to the public park and fields in Ocean Beach

Additionally, through an innovative fundraising approach, the race was able to raise $6,500 through a voluntary registration “ask” for its charity partners. As with many charity races, participating runners individually raised thousands of dollars for local and national charities of their choice, while creating goodwill for all San Diegans.

"The San Diego Half Marathon is an event for the community, by the community and we’re proud to support other community-focused efforts such as the Lake Murray Playground Project," said Susan Briggs, executive director of the San Diego Half Marathon. "Hundreds of people contributed to making the inaugural race more successful than we could have hoped for. Our mission is to help our local communities and I love that runners will be able to see their efforts at work at Lake Murray, a popular running spot!”
