Reading about the new elevators at the Grossmont Trolley Station in East County Magazine, made me wonder about other news regarding the trolley system. When I went to the website for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, I found it had done an excellent job providing information for its riders about the Trolley Renewal Project that will affect the schedules and locations for catching the trolley.

For people wanting to go shopping by way of the trolley this holiday season, it would be a good idea to check the website for information about the upgrades taking place during the trolley renewal project.

When the $620 million dollar project is finished, the Orange and Blue Line Trolleys will have been rebuilt. By 2015, new low-floor trolleys will operate on the entire MTS Trolley network. Other work will include new station platforms, next-arrival electronic signs, shelters, track, switches, overhead electric wire and more. The work will require station closures, temporary station relocations and substitute bus services.

During the time the renewal is under way, there are several ways to check if your trip to the shopping center will be affected by the project:

  • Check the MTS Twitter feed
  • Check the MTS Facebook page
  • Call the telephone hotline (619) 557-4533
  • Text message GOMTS (46687) to receive construction update texts
  • Look for Trolley Renewal info panels at station kiosks, and A-frame signs placed at impacted stations
  • Look for the latest trolley Renewal Travel Advisory on buses and trolleys
  • Join the Trolley Update email list
Have a wonderful trip!
