February 27, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)—Santana and West Hills went head to head on February 23rd to determine the 1st place Varsity team to represent the 2010-2011 Grossmont League in the county finals this Spring.

Ruth Weiss moderated the match and over 150 people crowded into the Grossmont High School library, where the standing-room-only crowd watched two brilliant teams of scholars move back and forth with the lead.

It was not until the final few minutes that the Santana Sultans, coached by Brooke Crocker finally took and held on to the lead over the West Hills Wolf Pack coached by Cheri Gabler. The final score was 84 to 75...159 points amassed by both teams in a 35 minute match.

“If you have ever had the privilege of watching a dual match, then you know that the buzzers were humming and lots of correct answers to the difficult academic questions were being given,” said SteveHaiman, Academic League advisor. “Despite defeating Santana in an earlier dual season match, West Hills still had to have a head-to-head playoff match, since they both had the identical 9 -1 records…The coaches and the participants made us all proud.”

These matches were followed by several All Star matches pitting the best of ten teams from around the district against each other and the Santana varsity winners. Cheri Gabler and Dick Beachserved as coaches of the All Star Team while GUHSD school board member (and former AL Moderator) Dick Hoy, Mark Gabler and Ruth Weiss served as moderators. The roster of the All Star players was nominated by their respective coaches.

It is estimated that over 350 students, parents, coaches and moderators were in attendance to enjoy an awards presentation and spaghetti dinner. GUHSD school board member Priscilla Schreiber joined Dick Hoy to honor the participants. Each coach was brought up to the microphone to introduce their team members and be given certificates for their participation.

Valhalla took first in the Junior Varsity division with an undefeated record, while Santana earned the first place trophy in the Varsity dvision.

The El Capitan vs Granite Hills match will be on Channel 16 TV on March 3 at 7:00 pm.
