Junior Jill Haight (below) leads Aztecs with four goals

February 23, 2018 (Denver) - San Diego State suffered its first loss of the season after dropping a 17-12 decision to No. 21 Denver in a Friday matinee at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Despite a career-high four goals from junior Jill Haight, the Aztecs were unable to overcome a 13-3 halftime deficit, falling to 2-1 on the year, while the Pioneers remain unbeaten at 3-0.
In addition, to Haight’s production, which included a game-high seven draw controls, SDSU received two tallies from junior Grace McGinty, while fellow classmates Harlowe Steele, Natalie Peel and Kirstie Greenlaw posted single markers each, along with sophomores Ryli Quinn and Taylor Sullivan.
The Aztecs stumbled out the gates early, falling behind 6-0 in the first 15 minutes and change thanks in part to three goals by Denver’s Julia Feiss—all from the free positon. SDSU finally got on the scoreboard after McGinty found the back of the net at the 13:45 mark, while Greenlaw converted a free-position shot of her own just 40 seconds later.
However, the Pioneers unleashed a 7-1 blitz over the remainder of the half, highlighted by Kendra Lanuza’s two goals, while Eliza Radochonski added a score and an assist to help provide the host school a 13-3 advantage by intermission.
The Aztecs outscored Denver 9-4 in the second half, but only 2:01 showed on the clock after Peel’s marker narrowed the gap to the eventual final outcome of 17-12.
Collectively, SDSU held a slight edge in draw controls (15-14); however, the Pioneers maintained the statistical advantage in shots (41-21), shots on goal (31-18) and ground balls (19-12) while winning turnover battle (14-21).
Individually, Feiss tied Haight for game-high honors with four goals, while Lanuza finished with three tallies, followed by Radchonski and Quintin Hoch-Bullen, who added two apiece. Denver’s Katherine Fischer led all players with five ground balls, while Nicki Wilkinson collected three.
On the flip side, Steele scooped up two ground balls for the Aztecs, along with sophomores Marissa MacRae and Morgan Taylor. In front of the net, sophomore goalkeeper Katy Sharretts made a career-high 14 saves, which is tied for fourth on the school’s single-game charge, while her counterpart Carson Gregg made six stops on the day.
