SDSU MEN'S TENNIS COMPLETES DAY ONE AT EASLEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC

November 1, 2019 (Las Vegas) - Four San Diego State men’s tennis players completed the first day of action at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic on Friday at UNLV’s Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Alex Scemanenco (San Diego, Calif.) was the Aztecs’ lone winner in singles play, outlasting Cal Poly’s Andrew Whitehouse, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, in the Flight Three round of 16.

The rest of the SDSU delegation was not as fortune, however, as senior Fabian Roensdorf (Dortmund, Germany) and junior Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) were upended in their Flight One opening matches.

Roensdorf dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to UNLV’s Tom Ciszewski, while Martinez fell victim to UCLA’s Connor Rapp by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

In addition, freshman Daniel Traxler (Dallas, Texas) found himself on the wrong side of a 6-4, 6-4 score against Loyola Marymount’s Thien Nguyen in the Flight Two round of 16.

Later in the afternoon, Martinez was ousted in consolation play after suffering a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Gonzaga’s Matthew Hollingworth, while Roensdorf received a bye.

In doubles competition, the Aztecs split their two encounters in the round of 16, where Martinez and Traxler pinned an 8-3 defeat on UCLA’s Bryce Pereira and Blaine Hovenier, while Roensdorf and Scemanenco experienced the opposite fate, falling to Gonzaga’s Hollingworth and Vincent Rettke.

The Larry Easley Memorial Classic continues on Saturday with quarterfinal doubles action at 9 a.m. followed by singles play.
