September 22, 2017 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team opened its 2017 fall schedule on Friday with four Aztec players participating in the Wildcat Invitational at Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club.

In the Navy Singles main draw, fifth-seeded David Hough was upset in his first-round match against Grand Canyon’s Frederick Grant, dropping a three-set heartbreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5). However, the SDSU sophomore stormed back with a vengeance in the consolation bracket by recording a straight-set triumph over Enzo Douillac of Arizona Christian, 6-0, 6-1. With his victory, Hough will square off against Northern Arizona’s Chris Steele on Saturday.

After receiving a first-round bye, fellow classmate Nicholas Mitchell experienced a similar fate against Enrique Asmar of New Mexico State in the quarterfinals, falling in three sets by a score of 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. The defeat sent Mitchell to the North Draw, where he will face Arizona’s Andres Reyes on Saturday.

The opening round was also unkind to Aztec freshman Jan Kirchhoff and Ignacio Martinez. Kirchhoff, the No. 3 seed in the Cardinal Singles Draw, suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback at the hands of Fresno State’s Jeremy Moser, while Martinez was dispatched by No. 4 seed Trent Botha of Arizona, 6-1, 6-1.

Kirchhoff rebounded with his first collegiate victory in the consolation bracket, dispatching New Mexico State’s Luis Flores, 7-6(5), 6-3, to set up a showdown with Sebastian Eguez of Northern Arizona on Saturday morning.

However, Martinez was not as fortunate in his consolation encounter with New Mexico State’s Sergi Espias, dropping a super-tiebreaker to his Aggie adversary, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. The loss relegated the SDSU rookie to the South Draw where he will battle another NMSU foe in Stijn Dehaan on Saturday morning as well.

Friday lone doubles match for the Scarlet and Black witnessed the duo of Martinez and Kirchhoff falling to the Arizona tandem of Reyes and Carlos Hassey by a 6-1 tally in the Cardinal Draw.

Elsewhere in the bracket, the No. 1 seeded pairing of Mitchell and Hough received a first-round bye before their clash with the Grand Canyon combo of Valentine Lang and Gregoire Balenci on Saturday.  Meanwhile, Kirchhoff and Martinez will lock horns with the Northern Arizona team of Eguez/Steele on the consolation side.
