January 12, 2020 (San Diego) -  Facing a stern test in its spring opener, the San Diego State men’s tennis team fell 7-0 to 15th-ranked Oklahoma State in a non-conference dual match Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center.

SDSU found itself behind the proverbial eight-ball after dropping the early doubles point. At the No. 1 position, the Aztecs’ Ignacio Martinez and Aaro Pollanen suffered a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Cowboys’ Dominik Kellovsky and Matej Vocel, who received a No. 1 ranking in the final ITA poll of the fall.

Likewise, Arnaud Restifo and Fabian Roensdorf witnessed a similar fate on the No. 3 court in a 6-3 setback to Mathieu Scaglia and Maxim Tybar, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage on the team scoreboard.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 match pitting Rafael Gonzalez Almazan and Jan Kirchhoff against the No. 19 duo of Luke Hammond and Emile Hudd was abandoned with the score knotted at 4-4.

SDSU was unable to stem the tide in singles competition, as five of six matches were decided in straight sets.

First off the court was Martinez, who was toppled by Brady Draheim in the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-2, while Roensdorf followed moments later after bowing to No. 41 Vocel , 6-2, 6-0, at the top of the ladder.

Over on the fourth court, David Hough found few answers in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Hammonf, while Restifo was upended by Etienne Donnet in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-2.

Although the two remaining matches were much closer affairs, the Aztecs could not avoid the sweep as Kirchhoff yielded to Scaglia at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6(4), while Pollanen fell victim to 91st-ranked Kellovsky in a super-tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6(6), 10-7.

San Diego State will step off campus for its next match, but will remain in the county when it battles UC San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 18 at The Santaluz Club, located at 8170 Caminito Santaluz E, San Diego, CA 92127.  First serve is set for noon.
