November 12, 2017 (Los Angeles) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team closed off its fall tournament schedule with a flourish Sunday, capturing five of six singles matches at the LMU Invitational after coming up empty in doubles.

Aztec sophomore Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) won his third straight on the weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Loyola Marymount’s Max Kaiser, while fellow classmate Joel Popov (Tampere, Finland) emerged victorious for the second day in a row with another straight-set decision over Pepperdine’s Scotland Garapedian, 6-1, 7-6.

In addition, sophomore Arnaud Restifo (Nice, France) and freshman Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) broke into the victory-column on the tournament’s final day. Restifo posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Pepperdine’s Max Mendelsohn, while Martinez outlasted the Waves’ Felipe Galvao by a 6-1, 7-5 count.

In his first singles match of the weekend, SDSU freshman Jan Kirchhoff (Germany) knocked off another Pepperdine opponent with a three-set defeat of Nicholas Baez, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

On the flip side, doubles competition was unkind to the Aztecs, who dropped all four of their encounters to start the day. The tandem of Popov and sophomore David Hough (Traralgon, Australia) registered SDSU’s closest score of the afternoon, but still came out on the wrong side of an 8-7 decision against LMU’s Gabriel Diaz Freire and Lucas Moreno.

Gonzalez Almazan, who teamed with junior Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.), fell just short in his quest for an undefeated weekend after the Aztec duo suffered an 8-5 setback to the Nevada pairing of Jeremy Merville and Jonathan Aremon.

San Diego State returns to action next semester when it opens its 2018 dual-match schedule with a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount and Brigham Young on Jan. 27 at Aztec Tennis Center.
