February 1, 2019 (Albuquerque) - The San Diego State track and field team wrapped up day one of the University of New Mexico Collegiate Classic Friday evening, their second indoor meet of the season. The night was highlighted by freshman Nyjari McNeil winning the 400 meter run with a new SDSU freshman record.
McNeil finished the 400 in 54.02, which was the No. 3 time in school history in addition to the fastest time for an Aztec freshman. The Maryland native set the school record in the 600 in her collegiate debut two weeks ago.
Fellow freshman Kasey Ebb took third in the 400, which was the unseeded portion, with a time of 56.44. Sophomore Maya Brosch set a new PR with 58.04 and was followed by Danielle Scott (58.74).
Freshman Sara Absten and sophomore Asia Smith continued their preparation for the pentathlon and competed in the 600 meter run and the high jump. Smith tied her personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-03.25 while Absten cleared 5-01.25. Absten finished the 600 in 1:45.37 and Smith clocked in at 1:51.31.
Nyjari McNeil, who was highly-recruited out of Maryland, has already cracked the record book in the 400, 600 and 800 just two meets in to her collegiate career. She set the new school record in the 600 (1:30.22), had the sixth fastest time in the 800 (2:14.09) and then tonight had the third best time in the 400 (54.02).
The majority of the Aztecs will be competing tomorrow in the final day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. The first events begin at 10:00 a.m. MT/9:00 a.m. PT.
