Pole vaulter Kaitlin Heri cleared 14 feet becoming only the fifth Aztec to do so

April 7, 2021 (San Diego) - The Aztec track and field team won the Mountain West Challenge Wednesday afternoon. SDSU finished with 179 points to win the four-team field that also included Oregon State (131), UNLV (123) and Nevada (112).

The Aztecs took first place in nine events and saw numerous athletes post career-best marks including Kaitlin Heri who cleared 14 feet in the pole vault to become just the fifth Aztec to ever do so.

Jada Moore won the 200m dash (24.00) and also placed second in the 100m dash (11.83).

Jalyn Harris paced the field in the 400m dash, finishing in 54.15.

Jessica Kain continued her breakout season by winning the 3,000m run with a time of 10:01.50.

Danae Dyer won the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.42.

Maya Brosch just missed setting another PR in the 400m hurdles after finishing in 58.99.

Jordyn Bryant finished in her in the shot put (48-10.25) and also took second in the discus throw (167-2).

Erica Grotegeer was the top finisher in the discus throw (171-5).

The SDSU 4x100m relay also placed first when the group of Alexus Alexander, Aisha Watt, Rhea Hoyte and Vanessa Spizewski finished in 46.54.

Other Aztecs to earn top three finishes include: Jalyn Harris (2nd 200m, 24.08), Emily Burd (2nd in 1,500m 4:36.58, PR), Elizabeth Funk (2nd in pole vault, 13-00.25, T-PR), Jade Cany (2nd in high jump, 5-07.00, PR), Carlene Masar (3rd 1,500m, 4:37.98), Aisha Watt (3rd in 200m, 24.57, PR) and Rhea Hoyte (3rd in 400m hurdles, 1:01.85).

Through three meets, all of which were team competitions, the Aztecs have taken first twice and second.

THE NOTE

Kaitlin Heri became just the eighth pole vaulter in the nation to clear 14’ this season.

UP NEXT

The SDSU heptathletes will be competing in the Franson Classic at Azusa Pacific on Friday and Saturday while the rest of the team will stay local and compete at UC San Diego’s Triton Classic on Saturday.
