February 1, 2020 (Seattle) - The Aztec track and field team turned in huge individual performances Saturday at the UW Invitational in Seattle and at the Mountain T’s Invitational at Northern Arizona University.

Nyjari McNeil broke the school record in the 800m (2:08.30), Danae Dyer won the 60m hurdles and tied the second-best time in school history (8.24) and Jada Moore won the 60m dash and set a new SDSU record for freshman (7.49).

McNeil, competing in the 800m Invitational among professionals in Seattle, finished in 2:08.30, more than a second better than the previous school record set by Ellison Grove (2:09.67) four years ago and nearly two seconds better than her previous best indoor time.

In Flagstaff, Danae Dyer set a PR with a time of 8.27 in the 60m hurdle prelims, finishing with the second-best time behind China’s Na You. Dyer bested her time by 0.03 seconds and earned a first-place finish with a mark of 8.24 seconds, topping You and tying her for the second-best time in school history.

Also at NAU, freshman Jada Moore was one of four Aztecs to qualify for the 60m dash finals. She finished third in the prelims with a time of 7.51 and then improved her time to 7.49 in the finals and took first place. Her time beat the previous SDSU freshman record of 7.54 set in 2007 by Karoline Koehler.

Joining Moore in the 60m finals was Jalyn Harris, who finished in third with a personal best time of 7.54, Tai McDonald (5th, 7.63) and freshman Tiana Osk Whitworth (7th, 7.65).

In the open 800m run at UW, Sakura Roberson continued her impressive start to her junior year by finishing in 2:10.35, a new PR and the third best time in school history. Sonja Andenmatten finished in 2:12.60, good for seventh in the program’s indoor history.

In the pole vault in Seattle, newcomers Molly Scharmann and Elizabeth Funk both cleared 12-11.50 to finish ninth and tenth and Kaitlin Heri came in 13th (12-05.50).

THE NOTE

Nyjari McNeil, just a sophomore, now has top three times in SDSU’s indoor history in the 400m (3rd, 54.02), 600m (2nd, 1:29.93) and the 800m (1st, 2:08.30).

UP NEXT

The Aztecs will be back in Albuquerque, N.M. next weekend (Feb. 7-8) to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational.
