March 9, 2021 (Fairfax, Calif.)The San Diego State women’s golf team finished in third place at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational Tuesday following a final-round 2-over-par 290 on the par-72, 6,157-yard course. The 290 was the second-lowest round of the day in the 12-team field and vaulted the Aztecs up three spots, finishing at 28-over 892.

Only Stanford, which is 11th in the latest Golfstat rankings (released March 2), carded a better score Tuesday at 1-under 287. Washington captured the team title at 12-over 876, while Stanford (+16), No. 35 SDSU (+28), No. 37 San José State (+33) and Brigham Young (+36) rounded out the top 5.

Bernice Olivarez Ilas was San Diego State’s top finisher, tying for third out of 66 entrants at 2-over 218 following her second straight 1-over 73. Ilas, who entered the final round in a six-way tie for second at +1, got to red numbers following birdies on the par-4, 357-yard third hole and the par-5, 464-yard ninth, making the turn at 2-under. Ilas, however, recorded three bogeys on the back nine to settle for the four-way tie for third. It was the best finish of her career, bettering the T-19 she recorded last week at the Bruin Wave Invitational.

Washington’s Rina Sasaki earned medalist honors at even-par 216, followed by San José State’s Antonia Malate (+1), and Ilas and three others at +2.

Sara Kjellker and Andrea Gomez, meanwhile, each carded an even-par 72, while April Ranches equaled Ilas at 1-over 73.

Kjellker finished in a tie for ninth at 5-over 221. In today’s 72, Kjellker recorded three birdies - No. 1 (par-5, 492 yards), No. 7 (par-4, 350 yards) and No. 17 (par-4, 385 yards) - and three bogeys.

Like Kjellker, Gomez also had three birdies - No. 4 (par-4, 350 yards), No. 9 and No. 12 (par-4, 359 yards) - and three bogeys before finishing her round with six consecutive pars. She finished in a tie for 11th, the top showing of her young career.

After shooting an 80 and 85 on Monday, Ranches bounced back with a 73 today to finish in a tie for 53rd at 22-over 238. Ranches grinded out 15 pars on the afternoon, while birdieing No. 2 and recording two bogeys.

Finally, Anna Lina Otten finished in a tie for 61st at 25-over 241 with a final-round 83 (+11).

San Diego State next competes at The Bruzzy in Dallas, Texas on March 29-30.
