September 25, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State defeated Colorado College, 1-0, on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck. With their second straight win, the Aztecs improved to 4-5 on the season and 2-0 in Mountain West action. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 5-5 and 1-1 in conference.

“It was great result to get on a really warm Sunday,” head coach Mike Friesen said. “It was a tough game for both teams with the heat and the pace of the game was pretty slow. Credit Colorado College for having a game plan that really limited out chances. We had to be really good to find the goal. The possession was extremely in our favor and the chances were a little bit more in our favor, but they were dangerous a couple of times playing off the counter. I was really impressed with our team for staying composed, getting another shutout and getting the win. The goal was quality and I thought we could have had maybe one or two more, but I’m really pleased with the result."

The aforementioned “quality” goal came off the foot of sophomore Milan Moses and came at a point of the game where only five shots were taken (CC 3, SDSU 2). The sequence started with Jen Rupey playing a ball up to Angela Mitchell, who tapped it to Moses who was 35 yards out. The sophomore then sent a pass to the opposite side of the field to Xochi Hunter and Dani DeRosa, who went back to Moses. The San Leandro native touched it once and put her left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the cage. The 64th-minute goal was her first of the year as was the assist for DeRosa.

The quality of San Diego State’s effort on defense was tier 1. The Aztecs posted their fourth shutout in their last five games and have not allowed an opponent to score in the last 484:21. Goalkeeper Gabby English has had a lot to do with the scoreless streak and she was again outstanding against the Tigers.

English, who finished with six saves, made two huge stops in back-to-back fashion three minutes after the Moses goal. Colorado College’s Chanisse Hendrix put a solid shot on goal from 10 yards out only to have English send her away. But in making the save, the ball ricocheted off English’s hands and right to Ali Basom, who had her shot denied by English, preserving SDSU’s lead.

The next 23 minutes were easier on the hearts of everyone in attendance, but the game had one more intense moment in the final 50 seconds. After Aliyah Utush’s final attempt landed in Louisa Mackenzie’s hands, the goalkeeper threw the ball up to midfield and where it ultimately found Hendrix, who snuck behind the Aztec backline. The forward had a one-on-one situation with English and tried to go to the lower right corner. Her attempt with 10 seconds left was gobbled up by the diving English and the Aztecs ran out the rest of the clock to win their seventh straight Mountain West regular-season home game.

SDSU returns to action on Friday when it plays at Fresno State. First tap is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and the game will air on the Mountain West Network.
