October 9, 2022 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s soccer (6-3-5, 4-1-1 MW) beat Fresno State (1-10-3, MW 1-4-1) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon on the SDSU SportsDeck. A stunning Trinity Coker free kick in the 70th minute gave the Aztecs the win.

After Denise Castro was fouled just outside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute, Castro, Carlin Blake and Coker all stood around the ball, but it was Coker who stepped up to take the ensuing free kick. Coker, a Poway Calif. native, unleashed a thundering strike that soared over the Bulldog wall that was setup in front of their keeper, and rocketed the ball into the top left corner of the net to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead. The goal was Coker’s second of the campaign and second of her career.

Earlier in the match in the first half, the Aztecs came out on the front foot. Castro thought she was through on goal just 30 seconds into the match, but her attempted chip shot over the keeper was cleared off the line, and the match remained scoreless. Later in the first half in the 36th minute Alexa Madueno came up big for the Aztecs. With Megan Galvan of Fresno State clear in on goal past the Aztec backline, Madueno made herself big and used her outstretched strong right hand to parry the shot above the crossbar of her goal and keep the match at 0-0. With neither team able to find the back of the net, the teams went into the halftime break knotted up at 0-0.

San Diego State remained the more dominant team in the second half as well, and that was evident in Coker’s free kick goal in the 70th minute to give SDSU the 1-0 advantage, and in their shot tally of seven in the half. The one goal was all the Aztecs needed to secure their third consecutive win and remain undefeated in their last five matches, as the defense stood tall all afternoon. Madueno in goal for San Diego State made four stops to preserve her second clean sheet in as many matches, and her third of the season.

The Stat: San Diego State is undefeated in their last five games, and have won three in a row.

The Stat II: With the win the Aztecs remain in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference.
