Aztecs log nine more victories on Saturday

November 11, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team notched nine more victories in the second day of its final fall tournament, SDSU Fall Classic II. The Aztecs matched their team score from Friday with victories in three of four doubles events, and six of eight singles wins.

Starting things off for the Scarlet and Black were seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz, who managed a 7-5 win over USD’s Torres and Chow in the black championship draw.

The Aztecs notched their other two doubles wins in the blue championship bracket as sophomore Mia Smith and junior Jenny Moinard dominated Soares/Medina (LU), 6-2, and freshman Nnena Nadozie and junior Magda Aubets soared past Anderson/Kukaras (USD), 6-2.

In the doubles red consolation draw, sophomore Berta Acero and freshman Abbie Mulbarger were unable to put a win together, ultimately falling 6-3 to Air Force’s Hatcliff/Laskey.

In singles competition, the Aztecs started the morning strong with five wins in the 10 a.m. matches. In the black championship draw, Mulbarger notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rebekah Anderson (LU), while Smith took USD’s Carolin Nonnenmacher to three sets for the win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the round robin event, Acero dominated Abby Bacharach (CP) 6-4, 6-1, and Aubets claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cal Poly’s Caroline Williams in the silver consolation bracket. Moinard downed Grace Olyphant (CP) with ease, 6-0, 6-2, in the gold championship draw to bring the team’s score to 8-1 on the day.

Kicking off the 11:15 a.m. matches, Buth struggled to keep up with Susanne Boyden (CP), falling 6-1, 6-2 in the red championship bracket. Nadozie put up a fight but was also unable to walk away with a win, dropping 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-4 to Utah’s Whitney Turley in the green consolation draw.

Diaz put together the team’s final win of the day, finishing off Chloe Hule (COLO) 6-4, 6-4 in the white championship draw.

The team wraps the final day of play on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center. Draws will be updated daily on GoAztecs.com. Admission to Fall Classic II is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. Parking is $2 per hour and is always required in P7. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
