Sun Devils sweep Aztecs on SoCal trip

February 25, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s tennis dropped its match against 30^th-ranked Arizona State, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. After claiming the doubles point, the Sun Devils defeated the Aztecs across the board in singles, with one match left unfinished.

ASU began the afternoon with strong doubles play in matches two and three. On court three, Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton defeated Alli Valk and Olivia Larsson, 6-1. Sun Devil duo Kelley Anderson and Savannah Slaysman also grabbed a victory against Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith, 6-2, to claim the doubles point for ASU. The top-seeded match between Jana Buth and Paola Diaz and ASU’s 36^th-ranked doubles pair Alexandra Osborne and Nicole Fossa-Huergo was unfinished.

The singles matchups followed in similar fashion, with a couple of quick decisions. Slaysman downed Larsson, 6-0, 6-1, in match five and Fossa-Huergo claimed a win over Smith, 6-2, 6-2, on court four. Anderson confirmed a Sun Devil win on the day with her victory against Diaz, 6-4, 6-0, in the third seed.

Shortly after match three finished, play halted on court two, where Davis was up on No. 72 Hampton in the second set. The match was unfinished and did not count towards the total team score. On court six, ASU’s Gussie O'Sullivan finished off Berta Acero, 6-2, 6-0. As the last Aztec left on the court, Jana Buth fought but fell short to 79^th-ranked Kassidy Jump in a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 decision.

Now at 4-7 on the season, the Aztecs will remain in San Diego next week as they face cross-town foe University of San Diego on Wednesday. Play is set to being at 1:30 p.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center.
